Elisabeth Ekornes Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)
Edvard Grieg was born in Bergen, Norway. He married his cousin Nina Hagerup who was a singer. His love for her inspired him to write many beautiful songs. “Haugtussa,” Op. 67 is widely considered to be the best ever written in the European Lieder tradition. He received his first piano lesson from his mother and was later discovered at age 15 by the famous violinist Ole Bull. Ole sent him to further his studies in Leipzig. Grieg was mainly influenced by German composers, but developed his own unique style rooted in Norwegian Folk music.
